Rob Osborn got his medal, just not the one he was hoping for.
The Grade 9 student at Ridge-way- Crystal Beach High School won a bronze
medal in the midget boys discus event Friday in Day 2 of the Ontario Federation
of School Athletic Associations track and field championships.
The three-day meet wraps up today at the University of Toronto's Varsity
Stadium.
Osborn was seeded first in the province going into the event after winning
the Southern Ontario and South Regional titles with throws of more than 48
metres. He threw 45.01m for the bronze Friday. In the same event, his Ridgeway
teammate Matt Martz finished seventh.
Another Fort Erie athlete, Jeremy Rae, of Lakeshore Catholic, won gold Friday
with the top finish in the senior boys 1,500m race. In a race to the finish, Rae
edged John Paul Malette of Windsor's Assumption College by less than a second
set a new personal best time of 3:45.57.
"I knew he was on my shoulder the entire time. I was just hanging on," he
said.
For Rae, who in September is heading to the University of Notre Dame on a
track and field scholarship, this was the perfect way to conclude his long, high
school run.
"It has been a goal since Grade 9," he said.
Mohammed Ahmed of St. Catharines Collegiate finished in third place, coming
in at 3:54.07.
Ridgeway-Crystal Beach had a handful of other athletes competing Friday. Gabe
Todd finished seventh in junior boys shot put and Darren Pereira and Brendan
Keeping finished 11th and 12th, respectively, in the junior boys pole vault
Also competing from the school were Clay Grant, in the junior boys triple
jump, and the 4x400m boys relay team, but their results were not available at
press time.

Only three local girls competed Friday with the top finish
coming from A. N. Myer's Michelle Molodynia, who placed sixth in the junior
girls 1,500m race. Though she finished off the podium, her time of 4:43.49 was a
new personal best and was fast enough to qualify her for the national
championships July 17-19 in Prince Edward Island.
Saint Paul's Courtney Olah finished seventh in the senior girls triple jump
and Laura-Doepping- Schumacher, of Ridgeway-Crystal Beach High School, finished
17th in junior girls discus.
Saint Paul's Jason Diston finished outside the top 15 in the senior boys high
jump.
The track meet finishes today with some solid chances at medals for local
athletes. Saint Michael's Kendall Darnay (junior girls pole vault) and Mariah
Kelly (senior girls 800m), were both South Regional champions in their events.
The same can be said for Olah in the senior girls high jump, Sam Testa
(Ridgeway-Crystal Beach) in the junior boys 300m hurdles and Rae, who will be
going for his second gold today in the senior boys 800m event.
